Cool frames in Photoshop CS

I’ve been using Photoshop CS for a while now and some of the new features are really cool. For instance the previews of the Artistic, Brush Strokes, Distort, Sketch and Stylize filters are very handy. You get a good idea of what the filter will accomplish after applying it.

There are a lot more new features, but I thought to make things more interesting, I'll give you a tip on how to create an original border by using the Extract command. Here are the steps:

  • duplicate your Background layer as a back-up
(Command + J on Mac, Control + J on PC)
  • go to the Filter menu and choose Extract
  • use the Edge Highlighter tool and click once in one corners of the image. Hold down the Shift key and click again in a corner next to the first one, to create a line. Do this for all sides of the picture so you get some kind of frame around your picture. You don't have to create very straight lines, it's preferable to have them less straight and more randomly. You can use different Brush sizes to achieve this.
  • when you got a frame that is closed, select the Fill Tool and click in the middle of the picture.
  • hit the OK button and... there you go!
